The Hart Technique
Entrepreneurial training for the arts
The Hart Technique is currently practiced on two continents and serves as the philosophical foundation of The International Theatre Academy Norway (in Oslo, Norway) and Austin Conservatory of Professional Arts (in Austin, TX). The Hart Technique was originated by American James Hart, founder of The International Theatre Academy Norway (TITAN Teaterskole). Hart built a fully accredited, full-time professional theatre training program to specifically fill a gap that exists in American theatre training. Following this process, The Hart Technique emerged.
THE GAP: The bulk of American theatre training programs train students in a technique of arts education that leads to rampant unemployment. The techniques popularly taught in the bulk of our training institutions are all art technique and no real business technique.
THE SOLUTION: Entrepreneurial training in the arts needs to become the new standard in American Theatre training. When students have both arts technique and entrepreneurial skills, they are able to compete for existing work and create profitable opportunities where there was nothing before.
THE RESULT: With a widespread shift in American theatre training, with institutions offering both arts and entrepreneurial and business skills, graduates will create new venues for profit. With new voices and new venues, new audiences will develop. With new audiences, we have new jobs to be filled. The cultural implications are at once profound.
With our institutions educating students how to meet market demands, to have and build vision and to perceive and fill gaps in their respective communities, the potential for greater innovation and cultural contribution grows exponentially.
